Animal Communication: Establishing the Foundation

“What is man without beasts? If all the beasts were gone, man would die from great loneliness of spirit, for whatever happens to the beasts also happens to man. All things are connected.” –Chief Seattle

I have always had a rapport with animals, a feeling that my soul recognized and related to the life force within them.  However, I did not realize until I was well set on my spiritual path how greatly the animals in my life had influenced my feelings and actions all along the way. Looking back, I can pinpoint specific experiences and relationships that had a profound impact on how I currently view the world, my Higher Power, and my connection with all life.

Like many of us, I became aware of the many wonderful qualities inherent in animals through interaction with a beloved pet. In my case my first dog, Andy, was my best friend, my confidante and my playmate. He was a terrific companion for nine-year old who always felt like she didn’t fit in with her peers. He taught me all about unconditional love and acceptance. He made me realize that animals definitely have personalities and sometimes, a warped sense of humor. As is often the case, I did not appreciate him until he was gone.

My second dog, Trivia, came to me with a special mission that I was not even aware of until many years later. She was the companion that restored my ability to communicate with animals by helping me re-define and embrace my spiritual path. She is a master animal spirit who currently serves as one of my spirit guides, leading me on to even more spiritual discoveries.

As an animal communicator I witness many times over the impact animals have in our lives. I hear story after story about how our animal friends give us love, healing and spiritual blessings. I hear about life lessons being experienced, learned and passed on to others. My clients tell me about how a special relationship with a remarkable pet has taken them outside of themselves and made them aware of their own connection with all life forms.

In my animal communication workshops, I emphasize this connection and illustrate it in many ways through interactive exercises. The main point is that there is nothing magical about communicating with animals. It is not a rare talent that only a few special people have or can do.  We are all born with this capability and we are all doing it all the time, we just don’t realize when or how we are doing it. Often, we turn it off at a young age when we are told that it is wrong, impossible or ridiculous. My basic workshop is aimed at helping you recognize how you have communicated telepathically before and how you can do it consciously now.

If you are interested in exploring the depth of your relationship with your animal companion on your own you can do the following exercise, which was first proposed by Penelope Smith in her book Animal Talk. Choose a quiet time and place (turn off the TV and the phone) and just sit for a while with your pet. Simply observe the animal as it does whatever it chooses to do. Take the time to notice specific details about the animal: its size, color, shape, its physical characteristics. Next start noticing other details you may not have taken the time to see before: the texture of its hair, the expressions on its face as the animal experiences different feelings, how the animal reacts as you send love to it. The point of this exercise is to become aware of the animal as its own unique being. As you tune into the energy profile of the animal you will feel and recognize the spiritual essence embodied in that animal form. Your own life force will acknowledge the connection already established between you.

This simple exercise will give you the foundation for telepathic communication with animals. By recognizing them as fellow spiritual beings with their own unique qualities and gifts, we open the channel that allows communication to flow. The best part is that you don’t have to do anything. Just be open and receptive and acknowledge whatever comes to you. The more you do this, the more you will receive. Believe me, the animals are just waiting for us to listen.
